The Yugoslavian Mountain Hound breed of dog, also known as the Montenegrin Mountain Hound, was developed in Yugoslavia and is believed to have been developed by Balkan Hounds that were brought to the area by Phoenician traders. While it is unclear what breeds went into the development of the hound, it is believed that the Yugoslavian Mountain Hound was developed by crossing the Balkan Hound, Slavic hounds and several scenthounds breeds from Europe. While we are unsure when the breed was developed, we do know they are an old breed, however, the first breed standard was not created until 1924. The breed was primarily used as hunters and the breed excelled as a versatile hunting dog that could hunt in any terrain.
