Breed Description: 

The Vladimir Heavy Draft breed of horse is a Russian breed developed form crossing native Russian working horses with draft breeds of Europe.  Consequently it is smaller and lighter than most draft types, although it is still recognizable as a draft horse by its stocky build and thick mane, tail, and leg feathers.  the Vladimir Heavy Draft is almost always bay, although other solid colors occur, and often has white face and leg markings. they are known for having good power and strength, suitable for farm work, but with smooth flowing gaits that make them suitable also for riding and driving.

Origin: 
The Vladimir Heavy Draft breed of horse originates from western Russia, where in the 19th century heavy native horses were crossed with European draft breeds including the Percheron, Suffolk Punch, and Clydesdale. The objective of these crosses was to add the speed and endurance of the native breeds to the power and strength of the draft breeds, without losing size and strength. The early Vladimirs were mainly bred at a State stud farm in Gavrilovo-Posad. Careful and selective breeding for over a century resulted in the distinct type of the Vladimir Heavy Draft, and the breed was officially recognized in 1946.
