Origin:
The Treeing Walker Coonhound breed of dog was developed in the United States and can be traced to a man by the name of Thomas Walker, who imported several English Foxhounds from England. From these dogs, the Treeing Walker Coonhound was created by crossing the English Foxhounds with a dog of unknown origin by the name of "Tennessee Lead." The result was a versatile hunting dog that has ample speed and endurance. It is from these puppies that the Treeing Walker Coonhound was developed and while they were not well known, the breed was established as early as the beginning of the 19th Century. The breeds hunting ability made it a favorite for hunting possums and raccoons, among other prey, and its ability to "tree" a prey is what earned the breed its name. While they are not recognized by the AKC, the Treeing Walker Coonhound has been accepted by several kennel clubs and registries.
