Traveling in Airports with your Pets

As more and more people travel with their pets, the airports have recently opened up some near areas at a few airports to help accommodate those that fly with their animals.
A few of the airports are, Atlanta Hartsfield, which has installed an off-leash pick up dog park.  They have benches where pet owners may sit.  They also provide pick up bags for collecting the dog’s waste and trash baskets conveniently located to drop them.  The facility is 1000 square feet, and is part of the ground transportation center on the western side of the main terminal.

Los Angeles International Airport has added three “animal relief stations" near its terminals.  It had two.  They now therefore have five “relief station areas." These areas help disabled people who have guide dogs, or service dogs.  There is an Air Carrier Access Act that requires service animals relief areas to be installed at all the airports.

More and more airports across the country will be opening some areas for people traveling to airports with their pets, a place for them to relieve themselves as many airports are fully now just concrete pretty much everywhere.
Often, there are some hours to wait before flight.  Dogs, like humans, need to go to the bathroom.  If you are traveling by plane with your pet, and cannot stop as when traveling in a car, to let the animal out to relieve itself, it is best not to feed the animal the day it travels, unless it is leaving at night.  If flying at night, some food in the morning is fine, but keep it a small meal.  And make sure he has plenty of time to be outside before you head for the airport.  If a pet has to go to the bathroom while in flight, it must go in the crate.   In truth, no animal willingly wants to go to the bathroom where it must sit and sleep. It also creates a mess.  To ease the anxiety of your pet, you help your pet travel well, by removing the possibility of a stressful situation.  But, do carry some snacks or food with you on the plane, so that after you land, and your pet can walk around again, it can be given a bit of food.  This will also take its mind immediately off whatever anxiety it might have felt while in flight as he is reconnected to you.
The new pet facilities at the airports are great places to go just before you dog or cat must be crated and prepared for flight.
