Breed Description: 

The Transylvanian Hound breed of dog is a medium to large sized dog that should be lean and athletic. They should be muscular enough to look like a sturdy breed with plenty of endurance but they should never be too muscular where they look course or overweight.  They should be slightly longer than they are tall and their top line should be level with a slight tuck up on the stomach. The tail should be medium in length and have a curve to it.  The head should be rectangular with a boxy muzzle that is broad and well defined. The ears should be large and should hang down the side of the head.

The coat of the Transylvanian Hound should be very dense and it should lay flat on the dog. The hair should be smooth and short and it should create a smooth line on the dog. They should be primarily black with tan markings on the muzzle, feet, legs, chest and over the eyes.

Temperament: 
The Transylvanian Hound breed of dog is an intelligent and active breed that is known for their confidence and strong will. This is a breed that is used to getting things done and they are often happiest when they have something to do. Their intelligence makes them very easy to train but they can be stubborn from time to time. They are usually very loyal to their family and they can be very protective of them. The Transylvanian Hound is very good with children and tend to be gentle and patient with them. They can do well with other dogs but they do have a strong prey drive and may not be suitable to homes with non-canine pets.

The average height for a Transylvanian Hound is between 18 to 26 inches.
Weight: 
The average weight for a Transylvanian Hound is between 48 to 77 pounds.
Health Problems: 
The Transylvanian Hound breed of dog is a very healthy breed and has no known health problems at this time.
Living Conditions: 
The Transylvanian Hound breed of dog can do okay in apartments if they are given proper exercise, however, the ideal is a home with a large fenced yard. This breed should be monitored when it is outside. They are very adept at escaping from a backyard and have been known to dig under a fence and even climb 6 foot fences. They do need a fence since they can be protective of their home and do have a strong prey drive.
Exercise: 
The Transylvanian Hound breed of dog is a very energetic breed of dog and will need about 60 minutes of exercise each day to stay healthy and happy. It is important to note that the breed will become very destructive if they are bored so exercise is very important. This breed makes an excellent jogging companion.

Grooming: 
The Transylvanian Hound breed of dog is a very easy breed to groom and they require little to no maintenance to keep their coats healthy. On average, you should expect to brush your dog on a weekly basis to remove dead hairs and dirt. A wipe down with a damp cloth will keep them clean and they should only be bathed when it is absolutely necessary. Ears should be cleaned on a regular basis and nails should be clipped once or twice a month.
Origin: 
The Transylvanian Hound breed of dog was developed in Hungary, and more specifically in the Carpathian Mountains in Transylvania. While it is unclear how the breed was developed, it is speculated that they were developed by native dogs found in the area along with hound type dogs that the Magyar tribes brought with them. The breed was originally used for hunting and their versatility made them a favorite for Hungarian nobility. The Transylvanian Hound was used to hunt deer, wolves, bears, foxes and small animals such as rabbits. They are believed to be a very old breed, dating back centuries, but the Transylvanian Hound is a rare breed, especially outside of their country of origin.
