Origin:
The Toy Manchester Terrier breed of dog is an old breed of terrier and is actually the toy sized version of the Manchester Terrier, which can be traced back to the early 1500's and to a man named John Hulme in England. It was his hopes to produce a breed of terrier that was fast, fearless and exceptional at hunting and killing vermin such as rats. To do this, John Hulme crossed the Whippet with the Black and Tan Terrier and the result was the Manchester Terrier. The breed gained popularity very quickly and was commonly seen in pubs and inns, where their primary use was as a ratting dog. The breed became very popular over the years and by the 1800's many began to breed the dog down by crossing them with Chihuahuas to produce a dog small enough to fit into a belt pouch. This led to the Toy Manchester Terrier being created and both the standard and the toy being accepted by the AKC in the late 1880's.
