Breed Description: 

The Teddy Roosevelt Terrier breed of dog is a small sized breed of dog that should have short legs and a body that is slightly longer than they are tall with a proportion of 10 to 7 or 10 to 8. The top line of the dog should be level and the chest should be deep. While they should never appear too course, the Teddy Roosevelt Terrier should be muscular and athletic in appearance. The head should be wedge shaped with a broad, slightly domed skull and v-shaped ears. The ears of the Teddy Roosevelt Terrier can be either button or pricked. The tail can either be long or naturally bobbed and many owner opt to have the tail docked.

The coat of the Teddy Roosevelt Terrier should be short and dense. It should cover the dog completely and can be found in several colors including black, chocolate, white, red, tan, apricot, blue and lemon. They can also be a blue fawn, bi-colored in any of the colors with white, and tri-color in a combination of the coat colors. It is important to note that bi-colored and tri-colored should have white.

Temperament: 
The Teddy Roosevelt Terrier breed of dog is an energetic and fun loving dog that is known for their strong nature and mischievous spirit that often gets them into trouble. The breed is usually very intelligent and because of this, they are very easy to train. The Teddy Roosevelt Terrier often has a well of energy that makes them a wonderful breed for a variety of dog activities. They can have a well of energy and usually love spending their time with their family. The breed can be very friendly to strangers and generally they can get along well with other dogs, however, they do have a high prey drive and may not be recommended for homes with small, non-canine pets. The breed does very well with children but they can be more of a one-person dog than a family dog.

The average height for the Teddy Roosevelt Terrier is between 8 to 15 inches.
Weight: 
The average weight for a Teddy Roosevelt Terrier is between 12 to 35 pounds.
Health Problems: 
The Teddy Roosevelt Terrier breed of dog is considered to be a very healthy breed, however, there are some health problems that have been seen, although in a lesser quantity than they are with other breeds. These health problems include elbow dysplasia, hip dysplasia, allergies and malocclusions.
Living Conditions: 
The Teddy Roosevelt Terrier breed of dog can do very well in apartments if they are exercised properly, however, the ideal living condition is a home with a large fenced yard.
Exercise: 
The Teddy Roosevelt Terrier breed of dog is a very energetic breed of dog and will need about 60 minutes of exercise each day to stay healthy and happy.

15 to 16 years
Grooming: 
The Teddy Roosevelt Terrier breed of dog is a very easy breed to groom and they require little to no maintenance to keep their coats healthy. On average, you should expect to brush your dog on a weekly basis to remove dead hairs and dirt. A wipe down with a damp cloth will keep them clean and they should only be bathed when it is absolutely necessary. Ears should be cleaned on a regular basis and nails should be clipped once or twice a month.
Origin: 
The Teddy Roosevelt Terrier breed of dog was developed in America and is one of the few American breeds. It is believed to have been developed by terrier breeds that were brought to America by English settlers and minors and while there is some speculation on which breeds went into the creation of the Teddy Roosevelt Terrier, it is believed that the Smooth Fox Terrier, Whippet, Bull Terrier, English Terrier, Beagle, Manchester Terrier and the Italian Greyhound. The breed was originally used for hunting rats and other vermin and was commonly known as the Rat Terrier, however, there were two different sizes to the breed and it was the shorter legged Rat Terrier that was developed into the breed as we know it today. The breed was believed to have been owned by Teddy Roosevelt and it was his name that was given to the breed.
