Breed Description: 

The Swedish Vallhund breed of dog should be a sturdy breed of dog that is small in size and low to the ground. They should be compact and robust and their top line should be level. The dog should have an elongated body and the head should be broad and wedge shaped. The ears should stand erect and they should be large while the tail should either be non-existent or medium in length. If there is a tail, it is commonly docked short.

The coat of the should be a double coat.  The undercoat should be dense and soft and it should be short.  The top coat should only be slightly longer than the undercoat while still being short. There should be a noticeable ruff around the neck and there should be a slight fringe on the bottom of the tail.  The top coat should be slightly hard in texture.  The color of the Swedish Vallhund can be red-brown, gray, gray-brown and red-yellow.  Many have a small amount of white and a lighter color forming a mask.

 

Temperament: 
The Swedish Vallhund breed of dog should be a very intelligent and queit dog that is known for their pleasing temperament and their wonderful sense of humor. This is a breed that is considered to be very good-natured and they often pair that easy personality with an energetic spirit. They do very well with children and provide them wiht a playful and energetic playmate. The breed can be a bit stubborn but with firm rules, they will learn quickly and will respond to commands very well. The breed does well with pets and other dogs but like many herding breeds, they may try to herd people and animals in their family.

The average height for the Swedish Vallhund is between 12 to 16 inches.
Weight: 
The average weight for the Swedish Vallhund is between 25 to 35 pounds.
Health Problems: 
The Swedish Vallhund breed of dog is considered to be a very hardy breed and there are no known health problems at this time.
Living Conditions: 
The Swedish Vallhund breed of dog can do very well in apartments if they are exercised properly, however, the ideal living condition is a home with a large fenced yard. In addition, while they do enjoy being outside, they should not be an outdoor dog; this is a breed that loves being with their owners.
Exercise: 
The Swedish Vallhund breed of dog is a very energetic breed of dog and will need between 45 to 60 minutes of exercise each day to stay healthy and happy. It is important to give them both on leash and off leash exercise.

12 to 14 years
Grooming: 
The Swedish Vallhund breed of dog is a very easy breed to groom and they require little to no maintenance to keep their coats healthy. On average, you should expect to brush your dog on a weekly basis to remove dead hairs and dirt. A wipe down with a damp cloth will keep them clean and they should only be bathed when it is absolutely necessary. Ears should be cleaned on a regular basis and nails should be clipped once or twice a month.
Origin: 
The Swedish Vallhund breed of dog has origins that are fairly unknown but from what we do know, it has been determined that the breed was developed in Sweden and was commonly seen aboard Viking ships. In fact, the breed was a favorite for Vikings and they were often used for herding. The breed is believed to have arrived in England sometime around 800 AD but from there, the history of the breed was lost. It is speculated that it may have went into creating the Cardigan Welsh Corgi and the Pembroke Welsh Corgi but it has never gained much popularity and has remained relatively unknown even after being recognized by the AKC in 2007.
