Origin:
The Sussex Spaniel breed of dog is a breed of hunting dog that was developed in the late 1800's by a Mr. Moses Woolland and a Mr. Campbell Newington who became crossing a number of field breeds with hounds and spaniels. While we know where the breed was developed and by whom, the actual breeds that went into the breed is unknown. The breed was developed in Sussex, England, where it earned its name, and while it did have a breed standard, the Sussex Spaniel did not gain in popularity past Mr. Woolland and Mr. Newington. When the former passed away, the breed faced extinction, however a J.E. Kerr noticed the breed and worked with Mr. Newington to finish the breed development to what it looks like today. Even still, the breed did not take off as quickly as many other hunting breeds and it continued to decline over the years until it was once again facing extinction. Again, another fancier, Joy Freer, saved the breed and it is her line that is seen in many of the Sussex Spaniel pedigress today.
