Breed Description: 

The Styrian Roughhaired breed of dog is a medium sized breed of dog taht should be powerful and sturdy. This is a hunting dog with their build that is slightly longer than they are tall and their athletic appearance that brings to mind a dog built for endurance. The top line of the dog should be level and straight and the tail should be medium in length and carried in a slightly sickle like fashion. The head should be slightly rounded and the ears should be medium in length and hang flat on the dog.

The coat of the should be a wiry variety that is medium in length with shorter hair on the head. There should be a brush of hair on the bottom of the tail, but it should never look bushy or plume like. The coat should be hard to the touch and there should be a moustache on the face. The coat can should be red in color, however, it can range in shade from light fawn to dark red. White is accepted on the coat as long as it a blaze, necklace on the neck, tip of the tail, on the legs, feet and on the chest.

Temperament: 
The Styrian Roughhaired breed of dog is an intelligent and hardworking hunting dog taht has many of the best traits that one would look for in a hunting dog. They are versatile when it comes to work, however, they need room to burn out their energy. The breed is very loyal to their family, however, they are not the best family dog, being better suited to homes with older children. They tend to be very suspicious of strangers and even with their own family, they need to be given clear rules and training to keep them from becoming too stubborn. If they are given proper guidance, the Styrian Roughhaired is an exceptional dog that is eager to please and with proper training and socialization, they can learn to accept everyone. They do need good socialization to accept other dogs and they are not recommended for homes with small, non-canine pets since they have a high prey drive.

The average weight for the Styrian Roughhaired is between 35 to 40 pounds.
Health Problems: 
The Styrian Roughhaired breed of dog is considered to be a hardy breed of dog with few known health problems.
Living Conditions: 
The Styrian Roughhaired breed of dog is not recommended for apartments. This is a hunting breed and does much better in a home with a large yard or acreage.
Exercise: 
The Styrian Roughhaired breed of dog is an active breed that needs at least 60 minutes of exercise each day. They love being out and working so it is important to offer them a variety of activities.

Grooming: 
The Styrian Roughhaired breed of dog is an easy breed to groom despite their wiry coat. Generally, you need to brush them on a weekly basis. Some trimming may need to be done to keep the dog neat and tidy and the coat may need to be hand stripped several times a year. Baths should only be given when it is absolutely necessary and the breed can go several months between baths.
Origin: 
The Styrian Roughhaired breed of dog was developed in Austria during the 1870's and can credit its development to Karl Peintinger, who crossed Hanoverian scent hounds with Istrian Hounds. The result was a courageous breed that was used for hunting wild boar. The breed is considered to be uncommon today.
