Breed Description: 

The Stephens Stock breed of dog is a medium sized breed that has the overall appearance of a powerful and agile dog. They should be slightly longer than they are tall and there should be a straight back that is streamlined. The legs should be long without making the dog appear leggy and the ears should be high with a slight fold to them. The Stephens Stock should have a long tail that tapers to a point.

The coat of the Stephens Stock should consist of a soft and dense undercoat and a short, smooth top coat that is usually rough to the touch. They should be black in color although white markings are allowed.

Temperament: 
The Stephens Stock breed of dog is not a breed for new or timid owners. This is not a submissive dog by any means and the breed is usually an independent thinker and a courageous hunter. The Stephens Stock is very loyal to their family and they tend to be very protective. They are usually affectionate with people in their home but tend to be more reserved and suspicious of strangers. The Stephens Stock can do well with other dogs with proper socialization and training, but are not recommended for homes with small pets since they have a strong prey drive.
Height: 
The average height for the Stephens Stock should be between 16 to 23 inches.
Weight: 
The average weight for the Stephens Stock is between 45 to 55 pounds. It is important to note that the Stephens Stock should never be over 55 pounds.
Health Problems: 
The Stephens Stock breed of dog has no known health problems and they are considered to be a very hardy breed.
Living Conditions: 
The Stephens Stock breed of dog is not recommended for apartments. They are an active breed and need a yard to exercise in. The ideal home for a Stephens Stock is a home with acreage for the dog to explore. The Stephens Stock is not recommended as an outdoor dog since they thrive when they are with their family.
Exercise: 
The Stephens Stock breed of dog is an active breed that needs at least 60 minutes of exercise each day. They love being out and working so it is important to offer them a variety of activities. The Stephens Stock can make an excellent jogging companion and can do very well in a range of dog sports.

Grooming: 
The Stephens Stock breed of dog should be brushed once per week to remove any dead hair but outside of that, they are a very easy dog to groom. Special care should be given to the ears, since they can be prone to ear infections and the hair under the ears and around the feet should be trimmed on a regular basis. Baths should only be given when it is absolutely necessary and the Stephens Stock can go several months between baths.
Origin: 
The Stephens Stock breed of dog was developed in the United States and was developed from the Mountain Cur by the Stephens Family of Kentucky. The breed quickly became distinguishable from the Mountain Cur and was seen as a separate breed shortly after its development.
