The primary use of the breed was as a fighting dog, which was becoming a popular sport in England during that time. The result was a well-rounded dog that was aggressive towards other dogs but towards people. Because of their fighting ability, the breed became popular quickly and was imported into the United States shortly after being developed. There, they went on to developed both the American Staffordshire Terrier and the American Pitbull Terrier. When dog fighting was banned, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier fell out of favor, however, dedicated breeders managed to keep it from going extinct and have continued to develop its gentler qualities.
