It is unclear what breeds went into creating the Smalansstovare but it is believed they used hounds from Poland, England and Germany, as well as spitz breeds found in Sweden. The breed was fairly unknown until efforts to create a breed standard began in the 1900's. The breed had a standard by 1952 and while they are seen in Sweden, they are fairly uncommon.
