Breed Description: 

The Slovak Cuvac breed of dog is a large sized breed of dog that should be sturdy and athletic in appearance. This should be a dog of substance and they should be slightly longer than they are tall. The breed should have a wolf-like appearance and the top line of the dog should be level. The long tail should be straight, however, it will curl when the dog is moving. The head of the Slovak Cuvac should be broad and well formed and the ears should hang down the side of the head.

The coat of the Slovak Cuvac should be a double coat with a dense, soft undercoat that is thicker in the winter and a longer top coat. The topcoat should be very dense as well and medium in length. There should be shorter hair on the front of the legs and on the face and there should be a mane around the chest and neck of males. There should be no feathering on the dog's coat. The Slovak Cuvac is only found with a white coat, however, yellow shading on the ears is sometimes seen.

Temperament: 
The Slovak Cuvac breed of dog is an intelligent dog that is known for being very courageous and loyal. They love their families and often put themselves in teh role of protector. The breed does very well with children of all ages and tend to be very patient with them. They are usually very calm and are alert and watchful, making them an excellent guard dog. The breed can be difficult to train, simply because they are independent thinkers and it is important to provide firm rules and training with this breed. The Slovak Cuvac usually does well with other dogs and pets and while they can be sociable with their own family, they tend to be suspicious of strangers. They are not recommended for new or timid owners.

The average height for a Slovak Cuvac is between 23 to 25.5 inches for a female and 24.5 to 27.5 for a male.
Weight: 
The average weight for a Slovak Cuvac is between 68 to 81 pounds for a female and 79 to 97 pounds for a male.
Health Problems: 
The Slovak Cuvac breed of dog is considered to be a healthy breed and has no known health problems at this time.
Living Conditions: 
The Slovak Cuvac breed of dog is not recommended for apartments and is better suited to a home with a large fenced yard or even acreage.
Exercise: 
The Slovak Cuvac breed of dog is an active breed that needs plenty of exercise to stay healthy and happy. Expect to give your Slovak Cuvac between 45 to 60 minutes of exercise each day.

11 to 13 years
Grooming: 
The Slovak Cuvac breed of dog is an average to heavy shedder so be prepared for a large amount of hair in your home. The breed should be brushed on a daily basis to remove dead hair, especially during shedding season, and the hair around the ears, hocks and feet may need to be trimmed regularly to prevent matting. Bathing only needs to be done when necessary but nails should be clipped once or twice a month.
Origin: 
The Slovak Cuvac breed of dog was developed in Slovakian Republic and while it has remained a rather unknown breed, it is believed to be a fairly old one. It is believed that the breed can be traced back to the 1600's, and it was primarily used as a guard and herding dog. Although it is not clear what breeds went into the creation of the Slovak Cuvac, it is believed that it is one of the few breeds that was descended by Arctic Wolves.
