Breed Description: 

The Skye Terrier breed of dog is a small breed that should be well-balanced and proportioned. The breed should be robust in build with a low slung body and a level top line. They should have short legs and an elongated body with the length measuring twice the dog's height.  The ears should be large and can be found in both an prick and hanging variety. The tail should be long.

The coat of the Skye Terrier should be a double coat.  The undercoat should be short and should have a wooly texture to it. The top coat should be very long, measuring 5.5 inches when at its longest. There should be a full part down the back of the dog and the coat should lay flat agaisnt the dog on either side.  There should be feathering on the tail and the coat should be striaght with a slightly hard texture.  The color of hte Skye Terrier can be fawn, light gray, black, gray-blue, blue, cream, dark gray, and silver platinum. All of the colors can have black points on the ears, tip of the tail and muzzle.

 

 

 

Temperament: 
The Skye Terrier breed of dog is an intelligent and happy breed that is known for being a little clown. They usually love to preform for their owners and are often called "little hams." They are usually very affectionate and they love spending time with their owners. They are usually suspicious of strangers but with some time, they will warm up to new people and can be quite friendly. The breed is very brave and will try to protect their home and family. The Skye Terrier is good with older children but they can be snappy with younger. They do have a very high opinion of themselves and can be quite aggressive towards other dogs. In addition, the Skye Terrier does have a high prey drive and is not recommended for homes with small non-canine pets.
Height: 
The average height for a Skye Terrier is between 9 to 10 inches.
Weight: 
The average weight for a Skye Terrier is between 25 to 30 pounds for a female and 35 to 40 pounds for a male.
Health Problems: 
The Skye Terrier breed of dog is considered to be a very hardy breed and has no known health problems at this time.
Living Conditions: 
The Skye Terrier breed of dog is an active dog and they can do okay in an apartment with proper exercise. The breed does better if they have a home with a fenced yard. A fence is important with this breed because they can have a strong prey drive and may chase other animals. They should not be an outdoor dog.
Exercise: 
The Skye Terrier breed of dog is an active breed that requires between 20 to 30 minutes of exercise each day. Generally, two good walks will meet their needs but it is also important to give them an opportunity for off leash exercise as well. It is important to keep them on lead when they are not in a secure area since the Skye Terrier will chase ofter other animals.

12 to 15 years
Grooming: 
The Skye Terrier breed of dog can be easy or difficult to groom depending on whether you are showing them. For pets, simply keeping the coat clipped every six to eight weeks is all you need to do. They are very easy to maintain and a weekly brushing will keep the debris out of the coat. If you are showing your Skye Terrier, then brushing will need to be done once or twice a week. Some trimming may be required to keep the overall shape of the dog. Regardless of how the coat is kept, bathing should be done only when it is necessary. Nails should be trimmed once or twice a month and ears should be cleaned weekly.
Origin: 
The Skye Terrier breed of dog was a small breed of "earth dog" that was developed on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. The breed was commonly used for chasing animals from their burrows and were used to hunt a number of large game such as badgers and foxes. The breed is believed to date back before the 1500's and was loved by many nobility in the English court including Queen Victoria. Although the breed is an old one, it is a rare breed that has come close to extinction several times.
