Cat

Breed Description:

The Siberian breed of cat resembles a Maine Coon cat, although other breeds have been used to establish the current standard. Siberians have three types of fur that help protect them from the harsh Russian weather, and provides for a healthy, low maintenance coat. The Siberian cat is known to be a strong jumper that uses chirps and purrs when excited or interested in its surroundings. Siberians are known to have a thick, plump frame with rounded ears and long, thick tails. The coats are shiny and wavy so matting is rare, and coats can range in color and pattern. The Siberian is a wise choice to make as a family pet as well because it is hypoallergenic. A Siberian lives about 15 years and reaches between 10 and 20 pounds.

Temperament:
The Siberian is an affectionate and loyal breed that mixes well with multi-pet families or families with small children. The Siberian is not known to be a forceful breed when referring to affection. Siberians usually won’t be directly underfoot, but rather enjoys observing from a distance.
Health Problems:
The Siberian has always been a healthy breed. Only minor concerns may arise with this breed including hip dysplasia and Cardiomyopathy, also known as heart and muscle disease.
Living Conditions:
Siberians can be either an indoor cat or an outdoor cat. They enjoy the company of their families but if needed their coats are built to withstand harsh weather.
Exercise:
Due to the immense size of this breed, exercise is needed daily. Taking a Siberian for a walk on a leash or harness is a good form of exercise that both owner and cat can benefit from.
Grooming:
Brushing is only needed twice a week for the Siberian breed of cat. The silky-textured coat helps prevent matting.
Origin:
The Siberian originated in Russia almost 1000 years ago. It wasn’t until the 1980’s that the first was ever registered though. In the 40’s and 50’s Siberians were bred to help keep the rodent population under control. In the late 90’s, the U.S. got its first look at the Siberian breed when it was imported to America.
