Should You Declaw Your Kitten

Should You Declaw Your Kitten?

There has been much controversy over whether or not a cat should be declawed. Some owners insist it makes life much easier when it comes to preventing kitten-related damage to your home. Cats will also be less capable of harming your other pets or small children.  Others, however, feel this is a painful, cruel practice that should be stopped. It makes the cat impotent should it need to defend itself and less able to climb should it need to escape. Not to mention the health problems that can come after the procedure.

If you do not wish to declaw your cat, consider a few helpful alternatives. Make sure your cat has a scratching post to focus on rather than your furniture. Encourage use of this item by making it easily accessible for your cat at all times, especially while you are away.  Many pet supply manufacturers have also come up with commercially made solutions to help protect your home while training your cat. Repellants are available in easy to use sprays and protective coverings can be placed on furniture. There are even nail caps that can be worn on the tip of each nail to make it dull and soft without actually doing anything to the cat.
