Breed Description: 

The Shiloh Shepherd breed of dog is a large sized breed that resembles the German Shepherd in every way except for the size.  The body should be well-proportioned and it should be slightly longer than it is tall. The Shiloh Shepherd should have the appearance of a strong and athletic dog with a wedge shaped head.  The muzzle should taper to the nose and the ears should be large and erect, set high on the head and turned forward.  The tail should be long and the topline should be sloped.

The breed can be found in two coat types, both of which have a dense undercoat.

Plush:  This is a medium length coat that lays close to the skin over a shorter undercoat. The plush coat should have a mane around the shoulders and down to the chest.

Smooth:  This is a short coat that hsould be hard to the touch and should lay close to the skin. The top coat should be slightly longer than the undercoat.

Both coat types can be found in a number of colors including red, cream, black, white, tan, dark brown, black and tan, sable or silver.

Temperament: 
The Shiloh Shepherd breed of dog is an intelligent breed that is known for their even temper and their reserved nature. This is a regal dog that loves to watch their family instead of being a lap dog. They are very protective of their family, however, they should not be very aggressive. The Shiloh Shepherd should be very easy to train and they are known for being a courageous breed. The breed does well with children, although they may do better with older children. The Shiloh Shepherd can do very well with other animals, however, socialization is important for this to happen.
Height: 
The average height for a Shiloh Shepherd is between 26 to 30 inches in height, although some are much larger.
Weight: 
The average weight for a Shiloh Shepherd is between 80 to 160 pounds, although some are much larger.
Health Problems: 
The Shiloh Shepherd breed of dog is a very hardy breed and has no known health problems at this time.
Living Conditions: 
The Shiloh Shepherd breed of dog can do okay in apartments but they do better in a home with a large fenced yard. It is important to note that if the dog is an apartment dweller, they need to be exercised properly to remain calm and peaceful when they are inside. The Shiloh Shepherd can live outdoors but they do much better and have fewer problems if they live indoors with their owners.
Exercise: 
The Shiloh Shepherd breed of dog is a very energetic breed and requires at least 30 to 60 minutes of exercise per day. They do have excess stores of energy and if they are not properly exercised they can become very destructive. Shiloh Shepherds make excellent jogging companions. In addition to exercise, the Shiloh Shepherd is very intelligent and needs to have exercises that challenge their mind on a daily basis or they will become bored.
Life Expectancy: 
10 to 12 years
Grooming: 
The Shiloh Shepherd breed of dog does require a fair amount of grooming and you should expect to brush them two or three times a week at a minimum. During heavy shedding periods, expect to groom this dog every day and also be prepared for a large amount of hair in your home. The Shiloh Shepherd should be bathed two or three times a year and the hair around the feet and under the ears should be trimmed on a regular basis to prevent matting and infections from occurring.
Origin: 
The Shiloh Shepherd breed of dog is actually a recreation of an older breed and is considered to be a fairly new construct, although it is not considered to be a mixed or designer breed. The Shiloh Shepherd was developed in the 1960's in an effort to retain the beauty of hte old world German Shepherds, which were being diluted by poor lines and improper breeding. The efforts to create the Shiloh Shepherd was done by Tina Barber of Shiloh Shepherds Kennels and it is her work that has seen the breed recognized in several registries.
