Breed Description: 

The Shih Apso breed of dog is a "designer" or mixed breed that was created by crossing the Lhasa Apso with the Shih Tzu. Because of this, a breed type has not been established and the looks and temperament of the dog can greatly change from one puppy to the next. Generally, the Shih Apso will have qualities of both parents. The breed small sized breed should be compact with a slightly longer body than it is tall. It should be robust in appearance and should have thick limbs and a long tail that tapers. The ears of the Shih Apso are usually long and hang down the side of the head.The coat of the Shih Apso is usually a combination of the Shih Tzu and the Lhasa Apso with thick dense fur that is medium in length and has a wave to loose curl. The texture should be smooth and there is usually a topknot on the head..  The color of a Shih Apso can be anycolor or color combination.

Temperament: 
The Shih Apso breed of dog is a designer breed and because of this, their temperament can vary greatly. They are usually an affectioante breed that is known for their sweet disposition and clownlike temperament. They generally fit themselves into their owners lifestyle and are always happy to spend as much time with them as they can. The breed can be rather reserved with strangers and have a natural suspicion of them. They can do okay with older children but are not recommended for homes with younger children. The Shih Apso can do well in multi-pet homes.
Height: 
There is no set height for a Shih Apso at this time.
Weight: 
The average weight for a Shih Apso is between 15 to 20 pounds.
Health Problems: 
The Shih Apso breed of dog has no known health problems, however, it is important to read up on both the Shih Tzu and the Lhasa Apso to be aware of the health problems your puppy may be at risk for.
Living Conditions: 
The Shih Apso breed of dog can make an excellent apartment companion and really do well just about anywhere. They should not live outdoors and do much better in the home instead of in a kennel.
Exercise: 
The Shih Apso breed of dog is an active small dog so expect to give them about 20 minutes of exercise each day. Usually two walks per day will meet their exercise needs but they are happier when they have a little off leash exercise as well.
Life Expectancy: 
12 to 15 years
Grooming: 
The Shih Apso breed of dog should be brushed several times a week to keep the coat free of mats and dead hair. In addition, they should be bathed on a regular basis, usually once or twice a month, to keep their coat healthy. Like the Lhasa Apso, the Shih Apso can have their coats clipped to make them easier to care for.
Origin: 
The Shih Apso breed of dog is a designer `hybrid`breed that has become popular over the last decade or so. There is no actual origin for the breed and if you are interested in learning more about the Shih Apso, it is important to read up on both the Shih Tzu and the Lhasa Apso.
