Cat
Breed Description:
The Selkirk Rex is of medium build with a loose curly coat. A Selkirk Rex can have either a long or medium coat that sheds greatly. The coats have no limit to the colors or patterns. A Selkirk Rex has large round eyes, rounded ears and long thick tails.
Temperament:
The Selkirk Rex has inherited many positive traits from the multitude of breeds that were used in its development. One of these traits is the soft spoken easy going personality the Selkirk Rex possesses. Selkirk Rex’s tend to be very loving and loyal to their owners, and seem to be happier with a playmate or an owner that is home often. Selkirk Rex enjoys spending time snuggling with their owner and relaxing rather than running around.
Health Problems:
There are no specific health problems related to the Selkirk Rex breed.
Living Conditions:
The Selkirk Rex is not recommended for anyone who may have allergies to cats. Selkirk Rex’s tends to be indoor cats, but a little yard space for occasional trips outside is favorable.
Exercise:
Exercise is very important when owning a Selkirk Rex because of their naturally inactive lifestyle. Letting a Selkirk Rex out into a small yard gives the cat a chance to discover, hunt, and play.
Grooming:
Daily grooming is needed for a Selkirk Rex. The coat tends to be medium or long in length and very curly. Keeping the coat groomed will help prevent knots and discomfort for the cat.
Origin:
The first spotting of a Selkirk Rex was during the late 1980’s in Montana. One kitten was born with unruly hair and was later sold to a Persian cat breeder. American Shorthair, Himalayans and Persian cats were all used in the development of the Selkirk Rex breed.
