Breed Description: 

The Segugio Italiano breed of dog is a medium sized breed of dog that should be lean and athletic. They should have a slightly longer build than they are tall and should have a slight tuck up. The top line of the dog should be level and the head should be slightly rounded and hound like in shape with a long muzzle. The ears should be extra long and should hang down the side of the head while the tail should be long and tapered to a point. 

The coat of the Segugio Italiano should be short and smooth. It should lay flat against the skin adn should have a slightly hard texture.  It should have a natural shine and can be found in several colors including red, black and tan or wheaten.

Temperament: 
The Segugio Italiano breed of dog is an intelligent breed that is known for being very affectionate and loyal. This is a wonderful family dog that is usually very devoted and patient. They are usually gentle with children and can do well in homes with children of all ages. The breed usually does well with other dogs, but they do have a high prey drive so they may not be suitable for homes with smaller, non-canine pets. The Segugio Italiano is naturally wary of strangers and this makes them an excellent watchdog. They do have a fair amount of energy and the Segugio Italiano can become bored very quickly, which leads to destructive behavior.

The average height for the Segugio Italiano is between 19 to 23 inches.
Weight: 
The average weight for the Segugio Italiano is between 40 to 62 pounds.
Health Problems: 
The Segugio Italiano breed of dog is considered to be a very hardy breed and there are no known health problems at this time.
Living Conditions: 
The Segugio Italiano breed of dog is not recommended for apartments and really need ample room to run in. In addition, a fence yard is a must since they will chase after scents and many have been injured by traffic because of this nose down approach to trailing.
Exercise: 
The Segugio Italiano breed of dog is a very energetic breed of dog and will need about 60 minutes of exercise each day to stay healthy and happy. It is important to note that the breed will become very destructive if they are bored so exercise is very important. In addition, it is important to keep them on leash when they are not in a secure area since the Segugio Italiano will follow anything that smells interesting, heedless of the world around him.

Grooming: 
The Segugio Italiano breed of dog is a very easy breed to groom and they require little to no maintenance to keep their coats healthy. On average, you should expect to brush your dog on a weekly basis to remove dead hairs and dirt. A wipe down with a damp cloth will keep them clean and they should only be bathed when it is absolutely necessary. Ears should be cleaned on a regular basis and nails should be clipped once or twice a month.
Origin: 
The Segugio Italiano breed of dog is believed to be an old breed of dog taht can be traced back before the tiem of the Italian Renaissance. The breed is believed to have been developed in Italy to work as a hunting dog. It is not clear what breeds went into its development, however, there are some speculation that the Celtic hound, Phoenician sight hound and the Italian Hound were all used in its development. The Segugio Italiano was commonly used to hunt wild boar, however, it fell out of favor when the traditional hunts for the boar were brought to an end. The breed almost dwindled into extinction, however a few dedicated breeders managed to maintain the breed, although it has remained rare ever since.
