Breed Description: 

The Schnau-Tzu breed of dog is a "designer" or mixed breed that was created by crossing the Miniature Schnauzer with the Shih Tzu. Because of this, a breed type has not been established and the looks and temperament of the dog can greatly change from one puppy to the next. Generally, the Schnau-Tzu will have qualities of all the parents. They are often described as a teddy bear dog since they resemble one so completely. The breed is a toy to small sized breed with a compact and robust build that is slightly longer than they are tall. They usually have a curled tail and small ears that hang down the side of the head. The muzzle is short, giving them the teddy bear look.

The coat of the Schnau-Tzu usually consists of a double coat with a soft, short undercoat and a fluffy topcoat that is medium in length and very soft. The coat can be found in any color or marking but the common color gray.

Temperament: 
The Schnau-Tzu breed of dog is a designer breed and because of this, their temperament can vary greatly. They are known for being a very sweet dog that can fit into any lifestyle. They are very versatile and while they do enjoy snuggling with their owners, they also have an independent streak. They can be very mischievous when they want to be and they can also be very energetic. The breed can do well with children, although they are better suited to homes wiht older children since they can be snappy. While they are a friendly breed, they are not friendly with everyone and often approach strangers with suspicion. The breed can do okay with other dogs and pets.

There is no set height for a Schnau-Tzu at this time.
Weight: 
The average weight of a Schnau-Tzu is between 8 to 12 pounds.
Health Problems: 
The Schnau-Tzu breed of dog has no known health problems, however, it is important to read up on the Pomeranian and the Schipperke to be aware of the health problems your puppy may be at risk for.
Living Conditions: 
The Schnau-Tzu breed of dog is versatile when it comes to living conditions and they can live in both apartments and homes with yards. They should not live outdoors and do best when they are inside with their family as a companion dog.
Exercise: 
The Schnau-Tzu breed of dog is an active breed that requires between 20 to 30 minutes of exercise each day. Generally, two good walks will meet their needs but it is also important to give them an opportunity for off leash exercise as well.

10 to 12 years
Grooming: 
The Schnau-Tzu breed of dog should be brushed once or twice a week to keep the coat tidy. They should also be bathed once or twice a month and the ears should be cleaned on a regular basis. The Schnau-Tzu should have the coat trimmed every few months and this includes trimming around the ears and feet and also of the beard.
Origin: 
The Schnau-Tzu breed of dog is a designer `hybrid`breed that has become popular over the last decade or so. There is no actual origin for the breed and if you are interested in learning more about the Torkie, it is important to read up on both the Shih Tzu and the Miniature Schnauzer.
