Breed Description: 

The Schillerstovare breed of dog is a medium sized breed of dog that should be robust and athletic in appearance. This sturdy dog should have a level top line and should be slightly longer than they are tall. They should have the appearance of a fast dog that is powerful and built for endurance. The tail should be long and carried in a saber like fashion. The head should be cone shaped and the ears should be long and hang down the side of the cheeks.

The coat of the dog should be short in length and dense with a natural shine to it. There should be a soft undercoat and the top coat should be hard to the touch. The only coat color for this breed is black and tan.

Temperament: 
The Schillerstovare breed of dog is a happy breed of dog that is known for being very energetic and outgoing. This is a breed that loves to work and they need something to do or they can become bored. The breed is usually affectionate and loyal to their family but they are not a breed that will just roll over and listen. The Schillerstovare needs firm training and consistent rules so they are not recommended for new or timid owners. The breed can do well with children and usually does well with other dogs, however, they do need to be properly socialized to accept other small pets.

The average height for the Schillerstovare is between 18 to 23.5 inches.
Weight: 
The average weight for the Schillerstovare is between 40 to 55 pounds.
Health Problems: 
The Schillerstovare breed of dog is considered to be a hardy breed of dog with few known health problems.
Living Conditions: 
The Schillerstovare breed of dog is not recommended for apartments. This is a hunting breed and does much better in a home with a large yard or acreage.
Exercise: 
The Schillerstovare breed of dog is an active breed that needs at least 60 minutes of exercise each day. They love being out and working so it is important to offer them a variety of activities.

Grooming: 
The Schillerstovare breed of dog should be brushed once per week to remove any dead hair but outside of that, they are a very easy dog to groom. Special care should be given to the ears, since they can be prone to ear infections and the hair under the ears and around the feet should be trimmed on a regular basis. Baths should only be given when it is absolutely necessary and the breed can go several months between baths.
Origin: 
The Schillerstovare breed of dog is considered to be an old breed that was developed sometime during the Middle Ages in Sweden. While it is unclear of the exact breeds that went into creating this breed, it is believed that Austrian bloodhounds, Swiss bloodhounds and German bloodhounds were used to create it. The breed standard was created by a P. Schiller, from where the breed took its name, however, this did not occur until the early 1950's.
