Breed Description: 

The Sarplaninac breed of dog is a well built dog that should be medium in both shape and build. This is a large breed that should have a muscular body that is robust and very broad. The body should be longer than they are tall and the head should be broad. The ears should be medium in size and should hang down the side of the head while the tail should be carried low.

The coat of the Sarplaninac should consist of a double coat. The undercoat should be short and dense and it should have a woolly texture to it. The topcoat should be long and abundant. There should be a course feel to it and the hair should be straight and free from any curl. There should be feathering on the legs, belly and tail. The Sarplaninac should be black, gray, tan or white in color.

Temperament: 
The Sarplaninac breed of dog is not a dog for everyoen. This is a dog that is used to working on their own so they do need a firm owner who can set strong rules. Even then, the Sarplaninac is not a lap dog and prefers to be on their own. They are a very intelligent breed that takes their role of protector very seriously. The breed can do okay with children but they are not an affectionate breed. They do well with other dogs and pets, especially if they are raised with them. They are very suspicious of strangers and the Sarplaninac will protect their home and their flock with their life.

Weight: 
The average weight for the Sarplaninac is between 55 to 88 pounds.
Health Problems: 
The Sarplaninac breed of dog is considered to be a very healthy breed and there are no known health problems at this time.
Living Conditions: 
The Sarplaninac breed of dog is not recommended for apartments. They need a home with a large, fenced yard or even acreage to meet their exercise and space needs. The Sarplaninac makes a wonderful outdoor dog as long as they have proper protection from the elements.
Exercise: 
The Sarplaninac breed of dog is a very active breed of dog that requires about 60 minutes of exercise each day. The breed does well as a jogging companion.

11 to 13 years
Grooming: 
The Sarplaninac breed of dog is a very easy breed to groom and you should only expect to brush the coat about once per week, however; you will need to brush it two or three times a week during shedding periods. In addition, if you live in warmer climates, your grooming needs may increase up to 4 or 5 times a week. They do not need a bath on a regular basis and can go most of the year with only one or two. Ears should be cleaned on a regular basis and the nails should be clipped once or twice a week, but other than that, nothing more really needs to be done.
Origin: 
The Sarplaninac breed of dog was developed in Srbija, which is in the region of Macedonia, and was originally used as a herding and guarding breed. The Sarplaninac was fairly unknown throughout the world, although it is believed to be a very old breed of dog. The Sarplaninac was recognized as an actual breed in the 1930's but it wasn't until the 1970's that the breed was imported into the United States. The breed is a rare breed and continues to be fairly unknown.
