Breed Description:

The Saint Dane breed of dog is a "designer" or mixed breed that was created by crossing the Great Dane with the Saint Bernard. Because of this, a breed type has not been established and the looks and temperament of the dog can greatly change from one puppy to the next. Generally, the Saint Dane will have qualities of both parents. They are usually a giant sized breed of dog that is robust and well-proportioned. They should have a level top line and their build should be massive without appearing fat. The body should be slightly longer than they are tall and the tail should be long and tapered to a point. The head should be broad and boxy in shape and the long ears should hang down the side of the head.

The coat of the Saint Dane can range from a short, glossy coat to a long, thick coat. Usually, the coat is short and dense. It should cover the dog completely and there should be a glossy shine to it. The hair is usually hard in texture. The Saint Dane can be found in any of the colors common for the parent breeds, however, black with white markings is often a common coat color.

Temperament:
The Saint Dane breed of dog is a designer breed and because of this, their temperament can vary greatly. The breed is usually a very gentle and affectionate breed that is loyal and devoted. They love their family and often make a sweet and playful family companion. The breed usually does well with children of all ages, however, their large size often makes them better suited to homes with older children. The Saint Dane usually gets along well with other dogs and pets and are often described as being so sweet, they are just a big old lap dog.
Height:
The average height for the Saint Dane is between 25 to 34 inches.
Weight:
The average weight for a Saint Dane is between 110 to 180 pounds.
Health Problems:
The Saint Dane breed of dog has no known health problems, however, is important to research both the Saint Bernard and the Great Dane to be aware of any potential health problems your dog could be at risk for.
Living Conditions:
The Saint Dane breed of dog can do okay in apartments, however, their large size makes them better suited to a home with a fenced yard.
Exercise:
The Saint Dane breed of dog can be lazy or active depending on the parent they take after. Generally, the breed will need between 30 to 60 minutes of exercise each day to keep fit and happy.
Life Expectancy:
10 to 12 years
Grooming:
The Saint Dane breed of dog can differ in their grooming needs depending on the type of coat they inherit. Usually, the Saint Dane has the short coat of the Great Dane so they can be very easy to groom. If they have the short coat, brushing should be done weekly and it can be wiped down to keep clean. Bathing can be done when it is necessary. For the longer coat, brushing should be done on a daily basis and the Saint Dane should be bathed every month of two. The ears of the Saint Dane should be cleaned on a weekly basis and the nails should be trimmed once or twice a month.
Origin:
The Saint Dane breed of dog is a designer `hybrid` breed that has become popular over the last decade or so. There is no actual origin for the breed and if you are interested in learning more about the Saint Dane, it is important to read up on both the Saint Bernard and the Great Dane.
