The breed was created by crossing a number of toy terrier dogs of unknown pedigree to produce the Russian Toy. The original Russian Toy was shorthaired, however, in 1958, a puppy with a long fringe on the ears and legs was produced and efforts were made to keep the coat type in the breed.
