Breed Description: 

The Russian Hound breed of dog is a medium sized breed of dog that should have a strong body and a well balanced build. They should be athletic in appearance with a level top line and a slightly longer than tall build. The head should be broad with a wolf-like appearance and the triangular ears should be small and held low on the head. The tail should be long and carried low.

The coat of the Russian Hound should be short and dense. There should be slight feathering on the tail. The breed is usually found in a yellowish-red coat with or without white markings.

Temperament: 
The Russian Hound breed of dog is an intelligent and hard working breed that is usually very cheerful and affectionate. They are generally easy to train and the Russian Hound is usually eager to please their owners. They are extremely loyal and they tend to be very playful. The breed does well with children of all ages and they can do very well with other dogs. They are not recommended for homes with small, non-canine pets since the Russian Hound does have a strong prey drive.

The average height for the Russian Hound is between 24 to 27 inches.
Weight: 
The average weight for the Russian Hound is between 40 to 70 pounds.
Health Problems: 
The Russian Hound breed of dog is considered to be a hardy breed of dog with few known health problems.
Living Conditions: 
The Russian Hound breed of dog is not recommended for apartments. This is a hunting breed and does much better in a home with a large yard or acreage.
Exercise: 
The Russian Hound breed of dog is a very active breed and requires 45 to 60 minutes of exercise each day.

10 to 14 years
Grooming: 
The Russian Hound breed of dog is a very easy breed to groom and they require little to no maintenance to keep their coats healthy. On average, you should expect to brush your dog on a weekly basis to remove dead hairs and dirt. A wipe down with a damp cloth will keep them clean and they should only be bathed when it is absolutely necessary. Ears should be cleaned on a regular basis and nails should be clipped once or twice a month.
Origin: 
The Russian Hound breed of dog was developed in Russia and is believed to be traced back to the early 1800's. It is unclear what was used to develop the breed, but we do know that they were often used alongside the Borzoi for scenting and locating game, while the Borzoi would give chase. While the breed was popular in Russia, it wasn't until the 1920's that a breed standard was created and efforts were made to breed to a standard. The Russian Hound is considered to be an uncommon breed.
