Breed Description: 

The Redbone Coonhound breed of dog is a medium to large sized breed of dog that should be athletic in appearance and well-balanced. They are usually slightly longer than they are tall with a level top line and a lean build.  They should have a long head with a square muzzle and the long ears should hang down the side of the head.  The tail should be long and set high.

The coat of the Redbone Coonhound should be very dense and it should lay flat on the dog. The hair should be smooth and short and it should create a smooth line on the dog.  The Redbone Coonhound should be a deep red in color and there should be no markings on them.

Temperament: 
The Redbone Coonhound breed of dog is an intelligent and happy breed that is known for being very brave and courageous. This is a friendly breed that is affectionate and well--tempered. They usually get along well with everyone and can be very accepting of strangers. The breed is usually good with children and they do get along well with other dogs, although they may not be the best for homes with small, non-canine pets.

The average height of a Redbone Coonhound is between 21 to 27 inches.
Weight: 
The average weight of a Redbone Coonhound is between 50 to 70 pounds.
Health Problems: 
The Redbone Coonhound breed of dog is a very hardy breed, however, hip dysplasia has been seen, although at a lower rate than other breeds.
Living Conditions: 
The Redbone Coonhound breed of dog can do okay in apartments if they are given proper exercise. The ideal is a home with a large fenced yard so they have a place to burn their energy. This breed can do very well as an outdoor dog.
Exercise: 
The Redbone Coonhound breed of dog is a very energetic breed of dog and will need about 60 minutes of exercise each day to stay healthy and happy. It is important to note that the breed will become very destructive if they are bored so exercise is very important. This breed makes an excellent jogging companion.

Grooming: 
The Redbone Coonhound breed of dog is a very easy breed to groom and they require little to no maintenance to keep their coats healthy. On average, you should expect to brush your dog on a weekly basis to remove dead hairs and dirt. A wipe down with a damp cloth will keep them clean and they should only be bathed when it is absolutely necessary. Ears should be cleaned on a regular basis since they can be prone to ear infections and nails should be clipped once or twice a month.
Origin: 
The Redbone Coonhound breed of dog was developed in the United States as a hunting dog that was primarily used for hunting racoons. The breed was developed by crossing a number of breeds including the Foxhound and the Bloodhound. While the breed was seen before the 1840`s, much of the breeds development can be attributed to George F.L Birdsong, who continued to refine the Redbone Coonhound as a hunting dog. The breed was accepted by the AKC in 2009.
