The Pyrenean Shepherd was often used in conjunction with the Great Pyrenees, the latter being used to guard the livestock that the Pyrenean Shepherd herded. While the breed was well known in their native country, it wasn't until the 1900's that the breed made it to North America. It was officially recognized by the AKC in 1992, but it has remained an uncommon and not well-known breed.
