While it is unclear what went into developing the breed, it is believed that the Bardino Majero and the English Mastiff were both used. We also know that the breed was developed for dog fighting and with the abolition of dog fighting the Presa Canario quickly fell out of favor and the breed was close to extinction. However, a few breeders managed to keep the breed alive and with the interest of an American veterinarian by the name of Dr. Carl Semencic, the Presa Canario was saved from extinction and have begun to make a comeback in number.
