Breed Description: 

The Posavac Hound breed of dog is a medium sized dog that should be muscular and athletic in appearance. They should have a sturdy build and a slightly longer body than they are tall. They should have a level top line. he head should be relatively long with a slight dome and the ears should be long and should hang down the side of the head. The tail should be medium in length and should taper to a point.

The coat of the Posavac Hound should be short and smooth. It should cover the dog completely and be close to the skin, however, it should be rough in texture. The coat color should be any shade of wheaten red, from light yellowish red to fox red, with white markings on the tail tip, head, chest and neck, legs and belly.

Temperament: 
The Posavac Hound breed of dog is a cheerful and intelligent breed that is known for being a wonderful family companion. This breed is very good with children and while they are energetic, they can be very affectionate. The Posavac Hound is usually very eager to please and this can make training easy. They do have a high energy level and can become bored and destructive very easily. The breed is usually good with other dogs and pets and while they are friendly, they often make excellent watch dogs.

The average height for the Posavac Hound is between 17 to 23 inches.
Weight: 
The average weight for the Posavac Hound is between 35 to 45 pounds.
Health Problems: 
The Posavac Hound breed of dog is considered to be a very hardy breed and has no known health problems at this time.
Living Conditions: 
The Posavac Hound breed of dog is not recommended for apartments. This is an active breed that needs plenty of room to play so the ideal living condition is a home with a large yard. It is important for this breed to have a fenced yard since they will follow anything that smells interesting to them.
Exercise: 
The Posavac Hound breed of dog is an active breed and they really do need a lot of exercise. Expect to give them about 60 minutes of exercise each day or about three very long walks. They make excellent jogging companions. They should only be exercised on leash when they are outside a secure area since they will follow any interesting scent.

Grooming: 
The Posavac Hound breed of dog is a very easy breed to groom and they require little to no maintenance to keep their coats healthy. On average, you should expect to brush your dog on a weekly basis to remove dead hairs and dirt. A wipe down with a damp cloth will keep them clean and they should only be bathed when it is absolutely necessary. Ears should be cleaned on a regular basis and nails should be clipped once or twice a month.
Origin: 
The Posavac Hound breed of dog was developed in Yugoslavia and while the breed is believed to have been seen in the region as early as the 1400's, the first documentation of the breed as in the 1700's. It is unclear what breeds went into the creation of the Posavac Hound, but we do know the breed was used for hunting. The breed was originally known as the Kras Posavac Basin Hound but today, while uncommon, it is known as the Posavac Hound.
