Origin:
The Polski Owczarek Nizinny breed of dog was developed in Poland and is believed to have been developed by crossing the Tibetan Terrier, Lhasa Apso, Puli, Tibetan Mastiff and the Tibetan Spaniel, however, there is no clear evidence in regards to what breeds were used. What we do know is that the breed was developed as a herding breed to guard and herd livestock and it was established in Poland for several hundred years before it was brought to Scotland. Once it arrived in Scotland, the breed is credited with developing the Bearded Collie, however, the World Wars took the breed close to extinction, particularly in Poland. The breed was reestablished in the 1950's by a veterinarian named Dr. Danuta Hryniewics, who created a breeding kennel in Poland and is credited with saving the breed completely. It is unclear when the breed was imported into the United States but we do know that it wasn't until 2001 that the breed was recognized by the AKC.
