Breed Description: 

The Polish Hound breed of dog is a medium to large sized breed of dog that should be powerful and robust. They should have a sturdy build that is slightly longer than they are tall. The top line should be level and strong and the overall look should be of an athletic breed that is designed for work. The head should be broad and have a distinctive forehead that is wrinkled. The overall look should be noble and the dog should have a serene expression. The ears should be long and should hang down the side of the head. The tail should be medium in length and should be carried low. There should be a marked difference between the males and females with the females looking more feminine.

The coat of the Polish Hound should be medium in length and should consist of a dense, short undercoat and a longer top coat that is thick and hard to the touch. They should be tan and black or tan and dark grey in coloring. Dogs can have a small white blaze on the muzzle or a small white star on the chest.

Temperament: 
The Polish Hound breed of dog is an intelligent and brave hunting dog that has the energy and drive seen in most hunting breeds. In addition, the breed has an even temper that makes it a wonderful companion dog. The Polish Hound is very affectionate and will often protect their family with life and limb, although they are by no means aggressive. The breed is very gentle and tend to be very good with children of all ages. The Polish Hound is usually good with other dogs and will accept other pets with proper socialization.

The average height for the Polish Hound is between 22 to 26 inches.
Weight: 
The average weight for the Polish Hound is between 55 to 71 pounds.
Health Problems: 
The Polish Hound breed of dog is considered to be a hardy breed of dog with few known health problems.
Living Conditions: 
The Polish Hound breed of dog is not recommended for apartments. This is a hunting breed and does much better in a home with a large yard or acreage.
Exercise: 
The Polish Hound breed of dog is an active breed that needs at least 60 minutes of exercise each day. They love being out and working so it is important to offer them a variety of activities.

12 to 14 years
Grooming: 
The Polish Hound breed of dog should be brushed once per week to remove any dead hair but outside of that, they are a very easy dog to groom. Special care should be given to the ears, since they can be prone to ear infections and the hair under the ears and around the feet should be trimmed on a regular basis. Baths should only be given when it is absolutely necessary and the breed can go several months between baths.
Origin: 
The Polish Hound breed of dog is an old breed of dog that was developed in Poland, however, it is unclear when or how the breed came to be. In fact, th ebreed is believed to be traced back to the 1300's and has been used for hunting since that time. The breed was close to extinction during the World Wars. However, the efforts of Colonel Josef Pauslewicz and Colonel Piotr Kartwik recreated the line and the Polish Hound became known as the Ogar Polski for larger dogs and the Gonczy Polski for smaller dogs. Both lines are known as Polish Hounds and both are considered to be a rare dog breed.
