Origin:
The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen breed of dog is a breed of hunting dog that was developed in France during the 1500's. Despite this long history, the breed remained rather unknown and more emphasis was placed on ability than on actual form. In fact, before the late 1890's, the name referred to any small, wirehaired dog that was low to the ground and found in the area of Vendeen. However, in 1898, a breed standard was created and by 1909, the breed was separated into two breed sizes, the Petit and the Grand, which covered any dog over the size of 15 inches. While the breed has been cherished for their hunting ability, they have remained fairly uncommon and was only recently accepted by the AKC in 1991.
