Professional Pet Photographers

There is of course plenty of reason to take your own photos of your pets if you enjoy using a camera and you want to capture your pet at various moments in his life.

Another option for many is to find a professional pet photographer of which there are many who can create photographs that are quite exceptional for you.

Photographers began, such as Eadweard Muybridge to take pictures of animals in the early 19th century, with a camera that allowed him sequence shots of locomotion in animals, allowing for greater study of motion. Photographs were taken also to document events with animals, or to capture animals in particular habitats such as the fabulous photographers that have produced outstanding and revealing pictures as part of news documents for publications like ‘The National Geographic Magazine.’ Then, there are the avid pet owners, devoted breeders, and sports enthusiasts in the pet world who wish to have a favorite animal immortalized in the medium of photography, rather than a painting or drawing, or watercolor. Pets have for centuries been part of art work, and included in family portraits. ( See the court family portraits by Velazquez, with the children’s dog included, or go to a tapestry room in a major art museum and you will find great banquet scenes of the 16-18th centuries of European countries, which include pets always as part of the depiction of life style.) Photography is the medium of the masses for the twentieth and twenty first century to date and much is it used in a broad spectrum of ways in regard to animals.

You don’t have to own any pets to want a wonderful photograph of a loved species.

So please enjoy the search for photos whether you have your own pets or not.

Widely respected for his stunningly astute observations of dogs (more specifically, of the majestic Weimaraner), William Wegman once again dazzles with Puppies. Here Wegman chronicles three generations of Weimaraners with his insightful commentary and exceptional photography. Wegman's love for his dogs is expressed in every photograph and in every line of his awe-filled text. Speaking about his second Weimaraner, Fay, the author says, "She looked like she had wandered out of a Rousseau painting. Those luminous yellow eyes."

With their amber eyes and slouching postures, the weimaraner dogs photographed by Wegman haunt readers; the artist's use of human limbs in place of the animals' paws adds another dimension of strangeness. Yet in this collection of nursery rhymes, Wegman tones down the spooky shadows of, say, his Little Red Riding Hood in favor of bright pastels and airy negative space. The weimaraners solemnly consent to wearing a pink bonnet for "Little Bo-Peep" and a chef's hat for "Three Men in a Tub" and "Pat-a-Cake"; once again, thanks to clever set design and draped costumery, some gesture with human fingers and feet. But their doggy nature is not wholly camouflaged: in the illustration for "This Little Piggy," a canine farmer surreptitiously sniffs a rottweiler puppy "piglet." Wegman extends the comic element to the text by footnoting classic rhymes with dry advice. After "Little Boy Blue," Mother Goose scolds, "It's okay to take naps, but not when you are on duty," and "Jack Sprat" includes the low-fat warning that "Mother Goose reminds you to eat more vegetables." The book derives its edge as much from the freewheeling typography as from the dogs' intensity?although the eerily disguised hounds may still startle those unaccustomed to Wegman's approach. Deborah was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico and raised in the Bay Area of Northern California. The daughter of artists who had a home studio/darkroom, she began taking photographs and painting at an early age. An alumnus of California College of the Arts in Oakland, CA and The University of California, Santa Cruz, she has advanced degrees in fine art and psychology. In the mid 1990s, she began working with Polaroid SX-70 film, which provided an opportunity to combine her fine art background with photography. Stemming from this work she published a fine art card line of Polaroid photographs which sold in San Francisco and Los Angeles, California, smaller cities such as Santa Fe, New Mexico and Fargo, North Dakota, and many other places throughout the United States.

This led to a painterly, evocative portrait series using SX-70 Polaroid film which is a continuing project reflecting human diversity. She currently lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico. dsphotoart@gmail.com
