Breed Description:

The Patterdale Terrier breed of dog is a small sized breed of dog that is often confused as a toy breed; however, they are not a toy breed in any way and are a terrier through and through. The breed should have an athletic and sturdy body that is either square or slightly longer than they are tall. The top level should slope slightly but it should be strong and well formed. The dog should give the overall appearance of a strong and flexible dog with a square head. The muzzle should be well-proportioned and strong and the ears should be half pricked and turned to the front over the bright and intelligent eyes.  The Patterdale Terrier should have a medium length tail that is commonly docked and it should be thick and strong.

The Patterdale Terrier can be found in two coat types, smooth and broken. Smooth should be short, dense hair that covers the dog. The hair should be straight and it should have a coarse texture to it.  Broken should have slightly longer hairs and there should be a wiry texture to it. The coat should not be soft or smooth and there can be a substantial mustache, beard and eyebrows, however, not all broken coats will have the facial furnishings.  The coat can be found in a number of colors and patterns including black and tan, red, liver, black, bronze and grizzle.  White markings are allowed on the feet and chest.

Temperament:
The Patterdale Terrier breed of dog is a tenacious breed that is a terrier through and through. They are known for being energetic, courageous and intelligent and while they are small, they should not be confused as a lap dog. This is a breed that loves to go and they are usually very determined. In addition, their temperament and toughness makes them seem more like a large or giant sized breed than a small breed. While they are terriers, the Patterdale Terrier is usually a more laid back breed that is just as happy sitting around with their owners as they are to go out and play. However, be prepared to tackle a number of terrier habits including digging, chasing and a extremely high prey drive that makes them an unsuitable pet for homes with small, non-canine pets. They usually do very well with children but they tend to be very independent and are usually wary of strangers, making them an excellent watchdog.
Height:
The average height of a Patterdale Terrier is between 11 to 12 inches.

Living Conditions:
The Patterdale Terrier breed of dog is a small breed but they are not recommended for apartment living. They are very active and really do best with a large yard to run in. The breed should have a fenced yard since they have a strong prey drive and will chase rodents and other small animals if they get the chance. The breed can do well in a kennel setting if they are exercised enough, however, they should not be outdoor dogs.
Exercise:
The Patterdale Terrier breed of dog is a very energetic breed, especially when they are outdoors. They should have about 45 to 60 minutes of exercise each day and they benefit from having some mental stimulation along with the exercise. The breed should be exercised on leash when they are not in a secure area simply due to their prey drive.
Life Expectancy:
11 to 13 years

In addition, the Patterdale Terrier only requires a bath every few months and can do with only one or two baths a year. In between baths, the Patterdale Terrier can be kept clean with a damp cloth.
Origin:
The Patterdale Terrier breed of dog is a relatively unknown breed with an unknown history. We do know that the breed was developed in England, specifically in the Lake District of Great Britain and the village of Patterdale. The breed was originally used for hunting a variety of vermin that plagued farms including rabbits, rats and foxes and the small size made them ideal for following the vermin into their burrows. The breed remained unknown, even when they were brought to North America in 1978 and while efforts have been made to make them a more popular breed, they are still an uncommon breed today.
