Breed Description: 

The Norwegian Buhund breed of dog is a medium sized breed of dog that should be athletic and well-proportioned. The build of the dog should be well-balanced and the dog should be very similar to other Spitz breeds in look. The head should be wedged shaped with medium sized triangular ears that are erect. The tail should be medium in length and should curl over the dog's back.

The coat of the Norwegian Buhund should have a double coat. The undercoat should be short, and dense and should be soft to the touch. The top coat should also be short, only slightly longer than the undercoat and it should be slightly harsh to the touch.  The Norwegian Buhund can be found in a number of colors including wheaten, black, yellowish red, light red, and wolf sable.

Temperament: 
The Norwegian Buhund breed of dog is an intelligent and playful breed that is known for being very affectionate with their family. They are usually very playful and are often described as a little clown that is always interested in delighting their owners. They are usually very friendly to everyone but they do so in their own reserved manner, making strangers feel as though they aren't as friendly. The breed does require a firm hand since they can be rather stubborn. The Norwegian Buhund is very good with children and are usually very patient and gentle with them. In addition, the breed does very well with other dogs and pets.

The average height for a Norwegian Buhund is between 17 to 21 inches.
Weight: 
The average weight for a Norwegian Buhund is between 26 to 40 pounds.
Health Problems: 
The Norwegian Buhund breed of dog is considered to be a very hardy breed with very few health problems, however, an increase of hip dysplasia has been seen in the breed.
Living Conditions: 
The Norwegian Buhund breed of dog can do okay in an apartment if they are given ample exercise but the ideal is a home with a large fenced yard. This is not an outdoor breed and they really do thrive when they are with their family.
Exercise: 
The Norwegian Buhund breed of dog is a very active breed and they do best when they have ample exercise. The breed should receive about 45 to 60 minutes of exercise each day and they do need both on leash and off leash exercise. A Norwegian Buhund that is not exercised properly can become destructive.
Life Expectancy: 
13 to 15 years
Grooming: 
The Norwegian Buhund breed of dog is actually very easy to groom and you should only have to brush the coat once a week, except during shedding seasons. They should be bathed only when necessary but the hair around the feet and ears may need to be trimmed to prevent matting and infection. Ears should be cleaned every week and nails should be trimmed once a month.
Origin: 
The Norwegian Buhund breed of dog, well unknown, is a very old breed of dog and has actually been traced back to nearly 1000 years ago. In fact, the breed is believed to have been a cherished dog to Vikings and was used as both herding dogs and guard dogs. Despite its long history, the Norwegian Buhund was relatively unknown except in Norway but during the early 1900's, shortly after World War One, the breed gained the interest of some international breeders and began to be imported into the United States and other countries, although they have remained a rare dog breed to this day.
