Despite this, the breed is accepted as being one of the most primitive dog breeds and is believed to have been brought to the islands over 6000 years ago. it is also accepted that while many breeds of dogs have been diluted with cross breeding, the New Guinea Singing Dog was isolated from other dogs and remained the same as it was 6000 years ago. The breed is considered to be a living fossil and all the New Guinea Singing Dogs found in captivity today can be traced back to 8 wild New Guinea Singing Dogs that were captured. There is an effort to capture more dogs but to date, none of the wild New Guinea Singing Dogs have been captured since the first 8 were.
