Breed Description: 

The Mountain Cur breed of dog is a medium sized breed that has the overall appearance of a powerful and agile dog. They should be slightly longer than they are tall and there should be a straight back that is streamlined. The legs should be long without making the dog appear leggy and the ears should be high with a slight fold to them. The Mountain Cur should have a natural bob tail.

The coat of the Mountain Cur should consist of a soft and dense undercoat and a short, smooth top coat that is usually rough to the touch.  The colors can be yellow, black, red, blonde, buckskin, brown, blue, black with tan points, or black with brindle points. The Mountain Cur can have white on the coat but it should not take up more than one third of the dog.

 

 

 

 


 

Temperament: 
The Mountain Cur breed of dog is not a breed for new or timid owners. This is not a submissive dog by any means and the breed is usually an independent thinker and a courageous hunter. The Mountain Cur is very loyal to their family and they tend to be very protective. They are usually affectionate with people in their home but tend to be more reserved and suspicious of strangers. The Mountain Cur can do well with other dogs with proper socialization and training, but are not recommended for homes with small pets since they have a strong prey drive.

The average height of a Mountain Cur is between 18 to 26 inches
Weight: 
The average weight of a Mountain Cur is between 30 to 60 pounds.
Health Problems: 
The Mountain Cur breed of dog has no known health problems and they are considered to be a very hardy breed.
Living Conditions: 
The Mountain Cur breed of dog is not recommended for apartments. They are an active breed and need a yard to exercise in. The ideal home for a Mountain Cur is a home with acreage for the dog to explore. The Mountain Cur is not recommended as an outdoor dog since they thrive when they are with their family.
Exercise: 
The Mountain Cur breed of dog is an active breed that needs at least 60 minutes of exercise each day. They love being out and working so it is important to offer them a variety of activities. The Mountain Cur can make an excellent jogging companion and can do very well in a range of dog sports.
Life Expectancy: 
12 to 16 years
Grooming: 
The Mountain Cur breed of dog should be brushed once per week to remove any dead hair but outside of that, they are a very easy dog to groom. Special care should be given to the ears, since they can be prone to ear infections and the hair under the ears and around the feet should be trimmed on a regular basis. Baths should only be given when it is absolutely necessary and the Mountain Cur can go several months between baths.
Origin: 
The Mountain Cur breed of dog was developed in the United States and more specifically in the Ohio River Valley. The breed is believed to be the result of early settlers crossing the Indian Cur with several European breeds including hunting hounds and terriers to create a versatile hunting and treeing dog. While the breed is believed to be several hundred years old, it was only declared a breed in 1957. Since then, strict rules have been applied to breeding Mountain Curs and it has remained an uncommon breed, however, it is more commonly seen in the Southern United States.
