Breed Description: 

The Miniature Pinscher breed of dog is a toy sized breed that should be athletic in appearance and should have a square body that is compact. The breed should be well-balanced and muscled and they should never be too heavy.  They should have a wedge shaped head and small ears that are naturally folded and set high on the head.  The tail is long and tapers to a point but many owners opt to dock the tail and crop the ears.

The coat of the Miniature Pinscher should be short, smooth and shiny. It should lay flat against the dog and should be slightly rough in texture.  They can be found in several colors including black and rust, red, chocolate and tan and stag red, which is a red coat with black hairs.

Temperament: 
The Miniature Pinscher breed of dog can best be described as a spirited breed that can be both frustrating and wonderful. They are known for their immense fearlessness and they are often finding a way to get into trouble. They are usually very loyal with their family and will usually lavish affection on anyone in their family but they can appear rather reserved, especially towards strangers. The breed is very good with children and is often good with other dogs. They are not recommended for homes with small pets since the Miniature Pinscher has a strong prey drive and may attack smaller pets. This intelligent breed is always alert and they are often looking for something new to get into.
Height: 
The average height for a Miniature Pinscher is 10 to 11 inches for a female and 10 to 12 inches for a male.
Weight: 
The average weight for a Miniature Pinscher is 8 to 9 pounds for a female and 8 to 10 pounds for a male.
Health Problems: 
The Miniature Pinscher breed of dog is considered to have an average health and can suffer from joint problems. Other health problems they can have are Epilepsy, Progressive Retinal Atrophy, Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease, Hypothyroidism and Patellar Luxation.
Living Conditions: 
The Miniature Pinscher breed of dog does very well in apartments and don't need a large yard to exercise in. They should not be an outdoor dog and should be protected from extreme cold temperatures.
Exercise: 
The Miniature Pinscher breed of dog is an active breed but they can usually be exercised with one or two walks a day. They can become bored quite easily and the Miniature Pinscher will become destructive if they are not exercised enough.
Life Expectancy: 
14 to 16 years
Grooming: 
The Miniature Pinscher breed of dog does not require a lot of maintenance and can be kept tidy with only one brushing each week. In addition, the Miniature Pinscher only requires a bath every few months and can do with only one or two baths a year. In between baths, the Miniature Pinscher can be kept clean with a damp cloth. Ears should be cleaned on a weekly basis and nails should be trimmed once or twice a month.
Origin: 
The Miniature Pinscher breed of dog was developed in Germany, and while the history can only be traced back several hundred years ago, the breed is believed to be one of the oldest breeds alive today. In fact, the breed is believed to have been originally known as the Reh Pinscher, which was developed to hunt rats. The breed is believed to be the foundation dog for several breeds; however, despite their long history, the breed was not refined until the late 1800's. Although they were popular in Germany, the Miniature Pinscher was noticed after World War One and the Miniature Pinscher was imported into the United States in 1919.
