Breed Description: 

The Maremma Sheepdog breed of dog is a giant sized breed of dog that should have a massive appearance and build. The top line should be level and everything about the dog should be large. The head should be broad, almost bear like, and the ears should hang down the side of the head. The tail should be long and is carried low.

The coat of the Maremma Sheepdog should be a thick double coat with a short, soft undercoat and a thick, long topcoat. The top coat should have a rough texture to it and a slight wave is desired in the coat.  The Maremma Sheepdog is commonly white in color; however, they can have markings of light yellow, ivory and pale orange.

 

Temperament: 
The Maremma Sheepdog breed of dog is a quiet and reserved breed that tends to watch the world instead of be overly active in it. They are usually very alert and attentive, making them an excellent guard dog. They tend to be reserved with everyone they know and they are usually very suspicious of strangers. Socialization is a must with this brave breed and so is training. They are not a breed for new or timid owners since this is a strong breed who will take control of the home if they find leadership lacking. The Maremma Sheepdog does very well with children and other animals in the house but often put themselves in the role of protector.
Height: 
The average height for a Maremma Sheepdog is between 23 to 28 inches.
Weight: 
The average weight for a Maremma Sheepdog is between 66 to 100 pounds.
Health Problems: 
The Maremma Sheepdog breed of dog is considered to be a very hardy breed and there are no known health problems in the breed. It is important to note that hip dysplasia has been seen in more frequency so ask your breeder about hip clearances before you purchase a puppy.
Living Conditions: 
The Maremma Sheepdog breed of dog is not recommended for apartments. They require a large fenced yard and do much better in homes with acreage. Since they are very protective, the breed should have a fence to prevent them from guarding the neighborhood.
Exercise: 
The Maremma Sheepdog breed of dog is an active breed and they do require a fair amount of exercise to keep them happy and healthy. Expect to give them between 45 and 60 minutes of exercise each day.
Life Expectancy: 
12 to 14 years
Grooming: 
The Maremma Sheepdog breed of dog should be brushed two or three times per week and during heavy shedding periods of the year, they should be brushed on a daily basis. They should be bathed about once per month and the ears should be kept clean and dry.
Origin: 
The Maremma Sheepdog breed of dog is an old breed that can be traced back to a white sheepdog that existed 2000 years as influential in the creation of many of the sheepdogs in Europe including the Maremma Sheepdog. The breed was developed in Italy and was originally known as two separate breeds until the 1950's, when both the Abrussese and the Maremmano were combined into one breed and one breed standard. Throughout the history of the Maremma, the breed was used for herding and as a flock guarding dog.
