Dog

Pronunciation:
mal-chee
Breed Description:

The Malchi breed of dog is a "designer" or mixed breed that was created by crossing the Chihuahua with the Maltese.  Because of this, a breed type has not been established and the looks and temperament of the dog can greatly change from one puppy to the next.  Generally, the Malchi will have qualities of both parents. They are a toy sized breed of dog with a delicate appearance that is both compact and dainty. The breed should have a level top line and are slightly longer than they are tall. They often have a rounded head, similar to the Chihuahua's apple head, and the ears can either be pricked or hang down the side of the head, although usually it is the latter.  The tail is usually long.

The coat of the Malchi can vary from the short Chihuahua coat to the longer Maltese coat but generally it is a combination of the two with a short undercoat and a medium length topcoat that is wavy and soft to the touch. The Malchi can be found in any of the colors of the parent breeds, however, the white coat of the Maltese is usually the most common coat color.

Temperament:
The Malchi breed of dog is a designer breed and because of this, their temperament can vary greatly. However, they are known for being a happy little dog that can be rather stubborn at times. This is a dog that knows how cute they are and they are often quick to wrap owners around their paws. They will take over a house if they are allowed so they should be properly trained. The breed is usually very loyal and while they can be a handful, they are usually a delightful and intelligent companion. The Malchi can do well with other dogs but they won't usually back down from bigger dogs. The breed is not recommended for homes with small children. They can be snappish at times and they can be easily injured with rough play.
Height:
The average height for a Malchi is between 6 to 10 inches.
Weight:
The average weight for a Malchi is between 4 to 9 pounds.
Health Problems:
The Malchi breed of dog has no known health problems, however, it is important to read up on both the Maltese and the Chihuahua to be aware of the health problems your puppy may be at risk for.
Living Conditions:
The Malchii breed of dog is versatile when it comes to living conditions and they can live in both apartments and homes with yards. They should not live outdoors and do best when they are inside with their family as a companion dog.
Exercise:
The Malchi breed of dog is an active breed that requires between 20 to 30 minutes of exercise each day. Generally, two good walks will meet their needs but it is also important to give them an opportunity for off leash exercise as well. In addition, the small size of the Malchi makes it very easy to exercise them inside, simply with a good game of fetch down a hallway.
Life Expectancy:
14 to 16 years
Grooming:
The Malchi breed of dog is often clipped to keep grooming to a minimal. If they are clipped, they only need to be brushed once a week but in a full coat, expect to brush them two or three times per week. The Malchi should be bathed once every month or two and the coat should be wiped down on a regular basis to keep it white.
Origin:
The Malchi breed of dog is a designer `hybrid`breed that has become popular over the last decade or so. There is no actual origin for the breed and if you are interested in learning more about the Malchi, it is important to read up on both the Maltese and the Chihuahua.
