Breed Description: 

The Lithuanian Hound breed of dog is a medium sized breed that should be sturdy and athletic in appearance. They have a slightly light bone that gives them a sleek look. The build is usually slightly longer than they are tall and their top line should be level. The head is usually broad and the ears are small and hang down the side of the head. The tail should be long and is usually carried low.

The coat of the Lithuanian Hound should be short and dense and should lay close to the skin. They should be black with tan points.

Temperament: 
The Lithuanian Hound breed of dog is an intelligent breed that is known for being an exceptional hunting dog that is always ready to work. The breed is known for their hard working nature and while they can be trained, they tend to be stubborn so they need a firm owner who can set clear rules. They can do well with other dogs but they do need to be properly socialized to accept other pets. The breed is not recommended for homes with small children.

The average height for the Lithuanian Hound is between 21 to 24 inches.
Weight: 
The average weight for hte Lithuanian Hound is between 60 to 75 pounds.
Health Problems: 
The Lithuanian Hound breed of dog is considered to be a hardy breed of dog with few known health problems.
Living Conditions: 
The Lithuanian Hound breed of dog is not recommended for apartments. This is a hunting breed and does much better in a home with a large yard or acreage.
Exercise: 
The Lithuanian Hound breed of dog is a very active breed and requires 45 to 60 minutes of exercise each day.

Grooming: 
The Lithuanian Hound breed of dog is a very easy breed to groom and they require little to no maintenance to keep their coats healthy. On average, you should expect to brush your dog on a weekly basis to remove dead hairs and dirt. A wipe down with a damp cloth will keep them clean and they should only be bathed when it is absolutely necessary. Ears should be cleaned on a regular basis and nails should be clipped once or twice a month.
Origin: 
The Lithuanian Hound breed of dog is believed to be a fairly old breed that was developed in Lithuania and was used for hunting boar, deer and other large game. The breed was developed by crossing Polish Hounds with Beagles, Russian Hounds and Bloodhounds. The result was a versatile hunting dog that thrived in Lithuania. However, the breed was close to extinction during the 1970's and by the end of the 1970's, efforts were made to save the breed from disappearing. The Lithuanian Hound has remained a rare breed since that time.
