Breed Description: 

The Latvian Hound breed of dog is a medium sized breed of dog that should have a slightly elongated back that is found in many basset breeds. The top line should be level and it should give the appearance of a strong and athletic dog. The head should be slightly rounded with long, low set ears that are folded. The hail should be long and straight.

The coat of the Latvian Hound should be short and dense and should lay close to the skin. They should be black with tan points.

Temperament: 
The Latvian Hound breed of dog is an intelligent and friendly dog that is known for having a good nature and a cheerful disposition. They do need firm rules since many hunting breeds can be stubborn but with proper training, this breed can really shine as a companion.
Height: 
The average height for the Latvian Hound is between 16 to 19 inches.
Weight: 
The average weight for the Latvian Hound is between 35 to 45 pounds.
Health Problems: 
The Latvian Hound breed of dog is considered to be a hardy breed of dog with few known health problems.
Living Conditions: 
The Latvian Hound breed of dog is not recommended for apartments. This is a hunting breed and does much better in a home with a large yard or acreage. In addition, the breed can be quite vocal and may not be the best breed for urban settings.
Exercise: 
The Latvian Hound breed of dog is a very active breed and requires 45 to 60 minutes of exercise each day.

Grooming: 
The Latvian Hound breed of dog is a very easy breed to groom and they require little to no maintenance to keep their coats healthy. On average, you should expect to brush your dog on a weekly basis to remove dead hairs and dirt. A wipe down with a damp cloth will keep them clean and they should only be bathed when it is absolutely necessary. Ears should be cleaned on a regular basis and nails should be clipped once or twice a month.
Origin: 
The Latvian Hound breed of dog was developed in Russia and is the result of mixing many English and Polish breeds with Lucernese breeds. The result was a hunting dog that was primarily used for hunting deer. While the breed gained some recognition during the 19th century, it was not accepted as a breed until 1947, when fanciers began to breed true to form and stopped adding different breeds into the line.
