Breed Description: 

The Lakeland Terrier breed of dog is a small dog that should be robust an compact.  They should have a sturdy build with square proportions. Their length should be equal to their height with a level topline.  The Lakeland Terrier should have a rectangular shaped head and the ears should be folded forward and small in size.  The tail should be carried high.

The coat of the Lakeland Terrier should be a double coat.  It should have a dense undercoat with a soft texture and a hard, wiry top coat.  The top coat should be half an inch in length and it should be slightly shorter on the chest, tail, shoulders, head, and ears.  There should be furnishings on the face and there should be bushy eyebrows.  They can be several different colors and patterns including grizzled, red, wheaten, blue and tan, blue, black and tan, black, liver and tan, or liver.  If they have markings, the markings should be on the tail and saddle of the dog.

Temperament: 
The Lakeland Terrier breed of dog is an intelligent breed of dog that has ample personality. They are often described as a fearless breed that rarely backs down from the challenge. They can be very bold and they are often described as the `cock of the walk.` Despite this bold temperament, the Lakeland Terrier is usually a very affectionate breed that can be friendly with everyone, although they are usually suspicious of strangers. The breed usually does well with children of all ages and they can do okay with other dogs, however, they will challenge other dogs even larger ones. The breed is not recommended for homes with small pets since they can have a strong prey drive.

The average height for a Lakeland Terrier is between 13 to 14 inches.
Weight: 
The average weight for a Lakeland Terrier is between 15 to 17 pounds.
Health Problems: 
The Lakeland Terrier breed of dog is a very hardy breed and has no known health problems at this time.
Living Conditions: 
The Lakeland Terrier breed of dog is a very versatile breed and they can do well in any home including an apartment. It is important to give them a fenced yard if they have access to a yard since the Lakeland Terrier does have a strong prey drive and will chase after neighborhood pets. They should not be outside dogs.
Exercise: 
The Lakeland Terrier breed of dog is an active breed but their small size makes them easy to exercise. Usually a game of fetch down a hallway will give them ample exercise but you should still give them one or two good walks in a day.
Life Expectancy: 
10 to 12 years
Grooming: 
The Lakeland Terrier breed of dog is an easy to care for breed and you should only expect to brush them two or three times a week. Bathing only needs to be done when it is necessary but the ears should be cleaned on a weekly basis. Nails should be clipped on a monthly basis and the only other task is to hand strip the coat two or three times a year to keep their coat healthy.
Origin: 
The Lakeland Terrier breed of dog was developed in England, and more specifically in the Lake District. While it is unclear how the breed came to be, we do know that the Lakeland Terrier was the foundation breed for several other terrier breeds including the Dandie Dinmont Terrier. We also know that the breed was known as the Patterdale Terrier at one time and that it is one of the oldest breeds of terriers. Besides those facts, we don`t know much else but we do know that they were used for killing foxes as well as hunting rats and badgers.
