Horse

Breed Description:

The Kustanair breed of horse is a relatively new breed of horse, having been developed in communist Russia less than 150 years ago. Due to the breeding practices used in Russia at the time, two distinct types of Kustanair horses developed. One type was well-cared for and managed in stables, and the other type was largely left to roam and forage on its own. As a result, the first type became more refined and suited for work under saddle, while the second type became exceptionally easy-keepers and excelled at pack and light draught work. The Kustanair has a small but handsome and refined head that exhibits intelligent and inquisitive eyes. The neck is of medium length and is well-muscled, rising up to pronounced but proportionate withers. The Kustanair breed of horse derives a great amount of power for its size from its deep chest and strong, sloping shoulders. The legs are strong, have well-formed joints, and very hard hooves. The Kustanair is usually bay, black, chestnut, gray, or sometimes roan.

Temperament:
The Kustanair breed of horse is very active and energetic, but is calm and reserved in its behavior while working or under saddle. Because of the high amount of Thoroughbred blood used to develop the breed, the Kustanair may become nervous when not exposed properly to noisy, crowded, or otherwise “busy” environments. Because of this, it is important to train and socialize the Kustanair at an early age, and to continue to expose them to new stimulus throughout their lives.
Height:
15 hh to 15.2 hh
Health Problems:
The Kustanair enjoys a largely disease and illness free life. The breed is extraordinarily hardy, has excellent stamina and endurance, and rarely takes ill when provided with sufficient feed and water. However, the breed may be susceptible to conditions and ailments that affect the horse breeds used in its development- especially the Thoroughbred. Orthopedic and joint issues may develop, or pulmonary or immune problems may arise in the Kustanair if breeding has not been responsible or monitored sufficiently.
Origin:
The original breeding efforts by the communist government were unorganized and haphazard. Horses from the steppes that were typically managed in taboons were crossed primarily with Thoroughbreds and the Russian Don, among others. The Kustanair was bred to perform well with any task, and to be exceedingly hardy, as conditions and resources in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in Russia were less than ideal. However, as the communist government gained more power and control over the region, studs that were state-managed became better funded and equipped, resulting in the Kustanair horse that we know today.
