Temperament:
The Kai Dog breed of dog is not often recommended for home life because they are a very primitive dog that requires a very strong owner. This is not a breed for inexperienced or timid dog owners since they will assume the alpha position in a home and the struggle for dominance will continue throughout their life. When they have a strong owner, they are very affectionate and loyal. This is not a family breed and is actually a one person dog. They are not recommended for homes with children but they can do very well with other dogs if they are socialized properly. The Kai Dog is not recommended with other household pets since they are used for hunting and have a strong prey drive. Socialization and training is a must for this dog and the latter can be very difficult because this breed is so dominant.

The average weight of a Kai Dog is between 25 to 55 pounds.

Exercise:
The Kai Dog breed of dog requires ample exercise, usually about 30 to 60 minutes per day, and when they are not in a secure fenced yard, they should be on leash since they will run off.
Life Expectancy:
12 to 15 years
Grooming:
The Kai Dog breed of dog only needs to be brushed once per week to keep their coat in top condition. Bathing should be done only when it is necessary. It is important, however, to wipe the dog down after it has been in long underbrush since their fur can collect debris.
Origin:
The Kai Dog breed of dog originated in Japan and is one of the six Spitz type dogs that were developed there, although the Kai Dog was developed in the Kai district. Originally used for hunting boar and deer, the Kai Dog has stayed relatively unchanged and is considered to be a primitive breed of dog and is believed to be the descendant of an extinct Japanese breed. In the early 1900's, many new breeds were imported into Japan and because of the popularity of these breeds, the Kai Dog faced extinction. It wasn't until the 1930's that an effort to revive the breed was made by a man named Haruo Isogai. His work led to the growth of the breed, although it has remained rare, and in 1934 the breed was recognized as a "Natural Monument" in Japan. Although the breed is not recognized by the AKC, it was recognized by the UKC in 1995 and is in the AKC's Foundation Stock Service directory.
