Just bringing home a new puppy and worried about his crying all night from sadness and being in a totally new place without anything he knows? Ask the breeder for a piece of something that smells like home, (example; something rubbed well or slept
on by his mom and other litter mates,) to take with you to put in his new bed with him. After a few days, throw it out. The scent will bring him a bit of comfort. (This is obviously not the choice to make if taking home a pet from a shelter.)
