Breed Description: 

The Wirehaired Istrian Hound breed of dog is a medium sized breed of dog. It is important to note that more emphasis has been placed on the hunting ability of the breed and less on the overall look. Generally, they should be a robust looking dog that has the appearance of an athlete. They should be slightly longer than they are tall and they should have a level top line. The head is usually broad with a well formed muzzle and the ears are usually long and hand down the side of hte head. The tail should be long.

The coat of the Wirehaired Istrian Hound should be long and wiry in texture. It should have a dense undercoat that is wiry. The overall length of the top coat should be between 2 to 3 inches and there should be a moustache, beard and eyebrows on the face. The coat color should be white with orange or lemon markings.

Temperament: 
The Wirehaired Istrian Hound breed of dog is an affectionate and intelligent dog that is known for being very energetic. This is a hunting dog and it thrives when it has something to do. The breed is usually very good with children of ages and this often makes it a wonderful choice for a family pet. They can be quite stubborn so the breed is only recommended for experienced owners who know how to give firm commands and rules. The Wirehaired Istrian Hound should have an even temperament that is calm and dignified, especially when they are indoors.

The average height for the Wirehaired Istrian Hound is between 17 to 23 inches.
Weight: 
The average weight for the Wirehaired Istrian Hound is between 40 to 44 pounds.
Health Problems: 
The Wirehaired Istrian Hound breed of dog is considered to be a very hardy breed and has no known health problems at this time.
Living Conditions: 
The Wirehaired Istrian Hound breed of dog is not recommended for apartments. This is an active breed that needs plenty of room to play so the ideal living condition is a home with a large yard. It is important for this breed to have a fenced yard since they will follow anything that smells interesting to them.
Exercise: 
The Wirehaired Istrian Hound breed of dog is an active breed and they really do need a lot of exercise. Expect to give them about 60 minutes of exercise each day or about three very long walks. They make excellent jogging companions. They should only be exercised on leash when they are outside a secure area since they will follow any interesting scent.

Grooming: 
The Wirehaired Istrian Hound breed of dog, despite having a rough coat, is actually very easy to groom. Generally, a daily brushing is recommended to prevent tangles but two or three a week is also enough to keep the coat tidy. Hand stripping should be done several times a month to remove dead hair and mats. Ears should be cleaned on a regular basis and nails should be clipped once or twice a month.
Origin: 
The Wirehaired Istrian Hound breed of dog was developed in Yugoslovia and was originally used for hunting small game such as foxes and rabbits. The breed is considered to be fairly old, however, the first time it appeared was in 1866 during a dog show in Vienna. Since that time, the breed has remained an uncommon breed.
