Origin:
The Hygenhund breed of dog was developed in Norway during the early 1800's by a breeder by the name of HF Hygen, where the breed took its name. The breed was created by crossing Holsteiner Hounds with various breeds that were found in Scandinavia. The goal was to produce a hunting dog that could work in Arctic conditions. The result was the Hygenhund and the breed was used for hunting a range of prey. The Hygenhund is considered a rare breed, and while they are cherished in Norway, strict rules for breeding has kept their numbers low.
